Ans:     All fishing boats have some common characteristics. They are as follows

  1. A fishing boat must provide safe living and working conditions for the crew.
  2. Its material must be resilient.
  3. They have good impact strength properties.

Ans:    The most common boat building materials are

  1. Wood.
  2. Aluminium.
  3. Fibreglass.

4. Write the advantages of wood as a material for boats

Ans:     The advantages are

  1. It has a excellent dynamic strength properties.
  2. Its nature.
  3. Its strength and floating ability, though it has a high density.

 

5. Explain the disadvantages of wood as a material for boats

Ans:     The disadvantages are

  1. Swells and shrink.
  2. Strength varies with different angle of the grain.
  3. Knots and cross grains seriously affect pulling or tensile strength.
  4. Creeps under the weight of permanent loads.
  5. It is attacked by fungi and wood boring organisms.
  6. It is adversely affected by temperature.
  7. The wood will also burn on high temperatures.

  9. Water soakage can increase the weight there by reducing the cargo capacity.

  5. Preservatives.
  6. Water-proof-glues.

7. Give a brief notes on the advantages of aluminium as a material for boat building

Ans:     The advantages are

  1. It is a strong as steel.
  2. It is about one third the weight of steel.
  3. It is resilient.
  4. It is dent resistant and can withstand impacts.
  5. Plates are easier to handle.
  6. They are very light.
  7. The welding speed is about 3 times as fast as steel.
  8. Hulls will be much lighter.

  10. Hulls and deckhouses may be unpainted, thus reducing maintenance cost.

 

8. Write short notes on the disadvantages of Aluminium as a material for boat building

Ans:     The disadvantages are

  1. Corrodes when it comes into contact with sea water.
  2. Corrodes when it comes into contact with other materials. This is called galvanic corrosion.
  3. Corrodes when it comes into contact with wet wood or treated with copper containing compounds.
  4. It is affected by temperature.

  2. It has a hull much lighter and uses less fuel.
  3. It is light which increases the carrying capacity of the boat.

Ans:       The disadvantages are

  1. It breaks easily.
  2. They tend to float excessively and lose balance.
  3. It designs cannot be easily changed.
  4. It requires reinforced engine holds.
